San Francisco / Sacramento / San Jose
We hate to lump these wonderful cities into one category since each one has its own unique feel. Not to mention, they all have different restaurants, events, activities, and hot spots to visit. But take your pick—we can guarantee you’ll be able to find an activity (or activities!) that suits you on your day trip, whether you’re interested in taking a tour, trying a few different restaurants, or attending an event.
Pacific Coast Highway AKA Hwy 1
If you’d like to take in some spectacular coastal sights, then consider going for a drive up (or down) the Pacific Coast Highway. Although the highway runs from Seattle all the way down to San Diego, you can keep your trip relatively short. Hop on the highway either north or south of San Francisco and pick a direction. If you like to have a plan, you can do a quick search on some of the best stops along the way. Or, if you’d rather fly by the seat of your pants, then just see where the road takes you!
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom
For those thrill-seekers out there, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is a great choice for a day trip. Just a few miles away in Vallejo, you can take a ride on the monstrous Medusa or the chaotic Joker. If you’d like to go along for the ride but like to keep your distance from those giant roller coasters, then you can enjoy smaller rides, shows, live entertainment, and a variety of animal attractions. Mendocino
If you are looking to enjoy some nature along the coast, then head on up to Mendocino, where you can enjoy a number of cliffside trails and beaches as well as Mendocino Headlands State Park. If the picturesque views aren’t quite enough for you, then consider planning your trip to match up with one of the festivals happening there.
