Design of the 2025 Toyota 4Runner
The design of the 2025 Toyota 4Runner undergoes a complete overhaul, starting from scratch. It is constructed over the resilient TNGA-F global truck platform of Toyota, which is shared with Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra, and Land Cruiser.
This platform employs a sturdy boxed steel ladder frame, incorporating a multi-link coil rear and double-wishbone front suspension.
Embracing the innovative TNGA-F platform boosts strength and elevates the vehicle's ride comfort and on-road performance.
Passengers can feel the advantages of this modern and advanced platform, even in the optional third-row seating. The fortified frame, combined with the robust i-FORCE MAX powertrain, enables the 2025 4Runner to tow up to 6,000 pounds.
What Do We Know About the Powertrains of the 2025 4Runner?
The next generation of 4Runner introduces two robust, fuel-efficient turbocharged 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engines. One is the i-FORCE engine, boasting 278 hp of power and 317 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited trims will feature this i-FORCE powertrain as standard.
For those opting for more eco-friendly options, the 4Runner offers the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, available on TRD Off-Road and Limited trims and standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum models. This hybrid system combines the turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission. It draws power from a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, delivering a combined system output of up to 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. This marks the most potent powertrain ever presented in a 4Runner.
Technology Features of the 2025 4Runner
The latest technology from Toyota finds its way into the 4Runner, boasting new screens. You'll see either an 8-inch or an available 14-inch multimedia touchscreen showcasing the brand’s latest Audio Multimedia system, crafted by the Connected Technologies team based in Texas.
This system supports wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility. It is complemented by a Qi wireless charging pad that delivers enhanced power output. On the right side of the multimedia touchscreen, you'll spot a USB-C data and charging port, while the front row offers dual USB-C charging ports, with additional availability for rear passengers. Lower trim levels come with a standard 7-inch gauge cluster, while higher grades step up to a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
Standard across all trim levels is the Smart Key System featuring push-button start. For those with an active Remote Connect trial or subscription, select trims have an available Digital Key.
This key links with compatible smartphones, granting access to vehicle entry and starting (dependent on a 4G network). Furthermore, the Digital Key can be remotely shared, providing more control over vehicle access than traditional physical keys.
What’s New with the Trim Levels of the 2025 4Runner?
The 6th-gen 2025 Toyota 4Runner has broadened its selection of trim levels to give customers a more comprehensive range of options. Now, there are nine trims to choose from, including SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.
Adding the Trailhunter trim means that drivers can now venture even further. Renowned for its capability and durability, the 4Runner has long been a favorite among off-road enthusiasts. This new inclusion will catch the attention of these adventure lovers.
The 2025 4Runner introduces its inaugural Platinum trim level, offering customers a luxurious, high-end experience without compromising capability. Positioned above the Limited trim, the Platinum edition features distinctive black exterior styling, automatic rain-sensing wipers, a Head-Up Display, heated second-row seats, and a standard tow tech package.
Off-road Capability of the 2025 4Runner
The 4Runner stands for formidable capability. Its latest iteration, the 6th-gen 2025 4Runner, further enhances its impressive legacy with added features. Among these is the new Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism, which boosts suspension articulation at the touch of a button. This capability allows the vehicle to flex while ensuring optimal tire contact with the terrain. Moreover, the 4Runner sets higher standards with its impressive 32-degree approach and 24-degree departure angles.
Drivers benefit from the available Multi-Terrain Monitor system, providing a clear view of potential obstacles on the center display. The 2025 4Runner will be available in 2WD, part-time 4WD, or full-time 4WD configurations. TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter trims will come standard with an electronic locking rear differential. For the Limited trim, a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a center locking differential on i-FORCE MAX models will be optional, while this setup will be standard on Platinum trim levels.
The Multi-Terrain Select system now operates in 4WD-High and 4WD-Low modes, offering customizable settings to manage wheel spin on various terrains like Mud, Dirt, and Sand. Another off-road feature, Downhill Assist Control, assists drivers in navigating descents by controlling the vehicle's speed. Additionally, the 4Runner introduces the new, quieter CRAWL Control function, serving as a low-speed, off-road cruise control, allowing drivers to concentrate on steering. When traction is severely limited, the available electronically activated locking rear differential can distribute power evenly between the rear wheels.
