2 Ways to use Smart Key on the 2018 Corolla
Using the handle sensors: The best part of the Smart Key System is being able to lock and unlock doors without taking the key out of your pocket or bag. The vehicle senses the Smart Key when you (and the key) get close. When you place your hand behind the driver’s door handle, only that door will unlock. When you place your hand behind the passenger’s door handle, all doors will unlock. To lock the doors, touch the lock sensor on the front part of the driver’s door handle. The trunk also senses the Smart Key. Simply press the button above the license plate to open it.
Using the remote key fob: To unlock the driver’s door, press the unlock button on the key fob once. You will hear two beeps and the parking lights, taillights, and side mirror lights will flash. The interior dome lights will also turn on and stay on for about 30 seconds or until the door is opened. If you want to unlock all doors, press the unlock button twice, and you will hear four beeps. To lock all doors using the key fob, press the lock button once. If you want to open the trunk, you can press and hold the trunk release button on the key fob until it opens. The panic button sounds an alarm and causes all exterior lights to flash.
What if your Smart Key loses power or the sensors don’t work?
Fortunately, each Smart Key comes with a built-in mechanical key in case the battery dies or the vehicle sensors malfunction. You can release this key by pressing the release key on the side of the fob. Insert the key into the driver’s door and turn it to the right once to unlock only the driver’s door. Turn it to the right twice if you want to unlock all doors. To lock all doors, turn the key to the left.
