What is a Toyota PHEV?
If you have been perusing the current 2021 Toyota lineup, then you may be wondering what is a Toyota PHEV? PHEV stands for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Toyota has a couple of options. We can explain what a plug-in hybrid is, and what its advantages and disadvantages are. We’ll also look at the Toyota PHEV lineup.
Can you drive a PHEV off electricity alone?
This is the huge advantage of a PHEV. You CAN drive on electricity alone. Typically, a PHEV model has limited range, but it can be plenty for your average daily driving. You charge up the PHEV in your garage overnight, and never have to burn a drip of gas. If your plans change or you just have to drive farther, then your PHEV seamlessly transitions to normal hybrid operation and continue on like normal.
Are there any disadvantages to a plug-in hybrid?
There are a few disadvantages to a PHEV that you may want to be aware of. For starters, they tend to cost a little more. The additional battery capacity also adds more weight to the vehicle which can mean slightly less efficiency than the hybrid counterparts. These disadvantages can weigh into your buying decision, but luckily, all the PHEV models currently offered from Toyota are also available as hybrids so you can make the right call for your specific situation.
